When employers are asked what job candidates can do to stand out in a positive way in a job interview, time after time, the response is to thoroughly research the company and be able to talk knowledgeably about it. The best candidates will use the research they’ve done and be able to connect key aspects of the job to their own strengths. Here are some great pre-interview activities as you prepare:
* Visit the company’s website, glassdoor.com, vault.com, and hoovers.com to get a feel for the company’s culture and any feedback about the company posted online.
* Use LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media to look for current work projects and professional interests of interviewers. Seek common interests that could help you connect with your interviewers.
* Perform a Google news search using the company’s name and/or key employees’ names. This will give you the heads up about any big happenings, good or bad, that may give you new insight into company operations and future plans.
* Be certain to 1) know yourself 2) know the job and 3) know the company:
Know Yourself
What are your professional strengths?
What transferable skills do you have?
What are your key accomplishments that relate to this job?
What unique qualities, skills, and experiences set you apart?
Why do you want this job at this company?
Know the Job
What are the top skills required for this position?
What types of problems will you be expected to solve for the company in this role?
Know the Company
What is the main product or service?
Who are the company’s competitors?
How many locations?
What are the current challenges being faced by this company?
What is the company culture?
One final tip – it’s a good idea to be aware of your internet presence as your interviewer will most likely be researching you as well! Check and recheck your privacy settings for accounts you do not wish employers to see. Create a positive presence by posting pictures of yourself participating in community events and leadership activities. Post achievements and examples of your work using LinkedIn and other social media platforms.
Happy researching and have a great interview!
