Although not as prevalent as they once were, job fairs can still be found and do offer job seekers the opportunity to connect with employers in a way that online job applications do not.
Here are 6 tips for pre-job fair prep:
1) Get a list of attendees. Do some research about the companies – find those of greatest interest and make yourself aware of their products/services by visiting the company website and doing a Google news search for the latest on that company.
2) Prepare a “sales pitch” about yourself. This is a brief “commercial” that provides the recruiter with key facts such as, your educational background, work experience, what you hope to bring to the company, and career interests.
3) Prepare 1-2 relevant and appropriate questions to ask each recruiter.
4) Be certain your resume is job fair ready. Print one copy for each company you are plan to approach. Be certain to print it on quality resume paper.
5) Be certain your wardrobe is job fair ready. Dress in business professional – conservative, well-tailored suits for men, skirted suit or pantsuit for women. Black, grey, dark blue, solid colors are best. Have a briefcase or professional portfolio in which to carry your resumes and to keep information you receive at the fair.
6) Get a notebook and pen to take with you. You will want to take notes after you meet with company representatives.
