Did you hear about the guy who during a virtual interview decided it was too much of an effort to wear pants? Oh he made sure he looked the part above the belt, but when he needed to get up to retrieve a document, his interviewer was treated to a vision of his plaid boxer shorts. And no, he was not interviewing for Joe Boxer.
The virtual or Skype interview has become commonplace. Neglecting to prep for this type of interview is a mistake and could lead to a bad experience because you overlooked the basics of conducting a successful Skype interview:
1) Know your technology and test it in plenty of time before your interview to allow time for repairs.
2) If you use a webcam, adjust it to the most flattering angle.
3) Perfect your “digital handshake.” Offer an introductory gesture such as a firm, somewhat slowly exaggerated head nod in place of the traditional handshake.
4) Be certain to look into the camera and not at the screen, so as to appear to be giving direct eye contact.
5) Wear interview attire from head-to-toe.
6) Be aware of your surroundings – is the space behind you interview appropriate? What is on the walls? Does it look like a professional office or a messy bedroom?
7) No children, pets, spouses, or friends allowed!
8) Conduct a practice interview with a friend using the same technology you will use during the interview. Ask for feedback from your friend about not only your answers, but the overall presentation.
